Patients suffering from severe periodontal disease often require surgery to effectively treat their condition. As an alternative to traditional surgical methods, Dr. J. Eric Herrington provides qualifying patients with LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure), an advanced solution that efficiently removes infected gum tissue and bacteria without compromising surrounding healthy tissue. Using a dental laser, Dr. Herrington can eliminate diseased tissue more precisely, reducing postoperative bleeding and recovery time. Dr. Herrington is proud to offer Meridian, MS, patients with conservative, yet advanced periodontal treatment featuring the latest techniques.
What is LANAP?
LANAP is a periodontal procedure designed to treat more advanced stages of gum disease. This state-of-the-art technology provides an alternative to traditional periodontal surgery. Instead of using a scalpel to eradicate the infection, reshape soft tissue, or perform crown lengthening, we can use a dental laser. We may recommend LANAP when non-surgical treatments such as antibiotic therapy or scaling and root planing prove ineffective. We can tailor your treatment to your dental needs, applying the laser to either your entire mouth or a localized area.
Preparing for Treatment
Prior to your treatment, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Herrington. During this time, he can evaluate your oral health and determine whether this is the best solution for your condition. You can also discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding treatment. While dental lasers are designed to provide more comfortable treatment, some patients may request sedation to reduce dental anxiety. At our practice, we offer both oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation to meet your unique needs.
The LANAP Procedure
During the first phase of treatment, we can apply the laser directly onto periodontal pockets, or the region between the gums and teeth. The laser eliminates any sections of compromised gum tissue.

During the second portion of the procedure, Dr. Herrington can use a scaler to eradicate any plaque and tartar that has accumulated below the gum line. He can then apply a special antibacterial rinse to clear out the debris. Once complete, Dr. Herrington can once again apply the laser to ensure all infected tissue has been removed. The laser can then facilitate healing, so the gums seamlessly reattach to the tooth.
The Benefits of Laser Surgery
LANAP is an exceptionally precise method that can provide patients with several treatment benefits, including:
- Reduced impact on healthy gum tissue
- Reduced bleeding
- Increased comfort
- Reduced recovery time
- Less time in surgery
Additionally, this conservative treatment is less invasive than traditional flap surgery, but provides equivalent results.
